Dressmaker news, patches & roadmap.

Official patch notes, a live Steam review score and player count, critic scores, the post-launch roadmap and the numbers from launch week — refreshed from Steam's own public data, with dates on everything that cannot refresh itself.

Updated September 29, 2026Unofficial & spoiler-safe

Where the game stands right now

These figures are read straight from Steam’s own public endpoints — not estimated, not copied from a tracker site. They were last refreshed on 2026-09-29 and refresh automatically. If a number here disagrees with what you remember, Steam moved; the page did not.

Steam user reviews97.9% positive from 6,365 reviews — Overwhelmingly Positive
Playing right now27,292 players in-game
Current price$14.99 (no discount running)
Figures last refreshed2026-09-29 (automatic)
One honest caveat: the player count is a live snapshot of who is in-game right now, not a record. All-time peaks are listed further down with the date they were set, because Steam does not publish historical peaks through any official endpoint.

Reviews: what players and critics say

Dressmaker is one of the best-received indie launches of 2026. Critic coverage is still thin — Metacritic had only two reviews in launch week, too few to publish a Metascore — but player sentiment is emphatic, and unusually specific about why.

Steam players97.9% positive from 6,365 reviews — Overwhelmingly Positive
MetacriticOnly two critic reviews recorded in launch week — too few for a Metascore
ScreenHub100/100 — Leah J. Williams called it “a triumph of original game design”
Checkpoint Gaming75/100 — positive
GameBrief8.4/10 — praised the craft depth, flagged the mouse-first design

What players keep praising: the sewing itself. Cutting on the grain or the bias visibly changes the finished dress, so choosing fabric reads as authorship rather than a menu click. The shop rhythm — commission, sketch, cut, sew, deliver, watch the customer react — stays satisfying even when the score is not perfect, and the option to ignore the brief entirely, or sabotage it on purpose, keeps it from turning into homework.

What players push back on: it is still a mouse-first game. Proper controller support is on the roadmap but not in the build, which is why Steam Deck is rated Playable rather than Verified. The other recurring note is that commissions asking for several style traits at once can turn free design into a scoring exercise.

Patch notes (official)

Cozy Lives ships patches as Steam announcements, and has moved fast — two patches in the first three days. Below are the most recent posts, summarized with the official announcement linked in full; the patch text belongs to Cozy Lives.

Patch Notes - Build 410 (24 September 2026)

Dearest Dressmakers, This is another small patch, mostly focusing on some UX improvements. Our first Dressmaker patch has arrived! Big thanks to all of the day one players that assisted us with your feedback and bug reports, which have already been super helpful. After Party Tea (22 September 2026)

Dearest Dressmakers, I cannot express the great relief I feel, but I shall try. As a game developer, I think it’s dangerous to love your game. Believing too strongly in something you’re working on can make you blind to its faults, overly optimistic about its audience and performance, and cause you to spend years of your life on something…

Dressmaker - Out Now! (21 September 2026)

Dearest Dressmakers, The big day is here, and I hope you all celebrate with wonderful dresses while I hyperventilate in the bathroom. We’ve made a game so devoid of violence, so flagrantly feminine and so painfully sincere that we were swiftly barred from Free Lives’s social media, lest we tarnish their name and cause them to lose their…

Scalding September Tea: Price Announcement (7 September 2026)

Dearest Dressmakers, Two weeks remain before the big day. I have been snooping around conducting investigative journalism, and have uncovered a very interesting tidbit: the anticipated price is to be $14.99, with regional pricing, and a -10% launch discount! If you’ve heard the whispers about pricing, this is very much on the lower end…

Dressmaker August Tea (31 August 2026)

Dearest Dressmakers, I have heard jaded rumblings and whispered YouTube comments about how our launch date is 21 September “unless there are delays”. Indeed, if Dressmaker were to delay its launch date, it would not be the first game to do so. But a reliable source tells me that not only will the game's launch date be met, but that the…

What’s coming next

The studio laid out a post-launch plan on launch day itself. None of it carries a date, and they have been deliberate about not inventing one.

  • Online challenge mode — compare dresses made by other players and vote for your favourites.
  • Transparent fabrics — cut from launch because double-sided mesh rendering still needs work.
  • Full controller support — in progress, aimed especially at Steam Deck, which runs the game today but is not yet Verified.
  • Mobile and Nintendo Switch ports — planned, no date announced. The Switch page tracks what is actually confirmed.
  • Near-term small updates — bug fixes, plus new fabrics and accessories.

Launch milestones

The first two weeks, in numbers. Everything below is dated and hand-checked — unlike the live figures at the top, these do not refresh themselves.

  • Recouped its development costs within 24 hours — confirmed by creator Jonathan Hau-Yoon in the studio’s September 22 Steam post.
  • Peak of 35,650 concurrent players, set on September 27 (SteamDB). This is the one figure that cannot be fetched officially, so it is dated rather than live.
  • Top ten on the Steam global top sellers chart in the days after launch, with outlets recording positions between fourth and tenth depending on the day.
  • Over 400,000 wishlists before release, up from 100,000 in June — a milestone the team celebrated publicly after being told the concept was too niche to find an audience.
  • Katsuhiro Harada, the former Tekken producer, posted the game with a one-word endorsement: “MUST BUY”.
  • The itch.io prototype was downloaded around 30,000 times in its first month and passed 100,000 later.
  • What shipped: roughly 35 hours of story commissions, 150+ dress pieces, 450+ fabrics, 350+ accessories and 32 achievements.

How the game came to be

Dressmaker is a quiet team inside a loud studio. Cozy Lives operates within Free Lives, the Cape Town developer behind Broforce, GORN and Terra Nil, and the game grew out of a prototype that Terra Nil co-creator Jonathan Hau-Yoon built with his partner Sabrina Becker — whose costume and dressmaking background is the reason the sewing holds up at all.

  • It started as a three-week prototype. A first playable build existed by July 2025; a concentrated sprint with Free Lives colleagues produced the itch.io prototype that convinced the studio to greenlight a full game.
  • Sabrina’s route here was not by choice. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome made the physical work of costume-making unsustainable, and Dressmaker became a way to keep the craft without the strain. Free Lives credits her with designing and curating the game’s dress pieces, aesthetic and “vibes”.
  • They were told it was too niche. The team has spoken openly about that warning, and about the relief of watching it land anyway.
  • The rest of the credits: music by Meydän, story and dialogue by Kerstin Hall.

The launch post is worth reading in full — it is a developer admitting that loving your own game is a professional hazard, then watching thousands of players call it their dream game.

FAQ

How often does this page update?
The live figures — review score, player count and price — are read from Steam's public endpoints and refresh automatically, along with the patch notes. Dated milestones and the all-time peak are hand-checked and do not refresh themselves.
Where do the numbers come from?
Steam's own public endpoints: the news feed for patch notes, the review summary for the score, the store API for the price and the player-count endpoint for concurrent players. Nothing is scraped from third-party trackers.
Why is the price different from articles I read?
The 10% launch discount ended on September 28, 2026, so most launch-week articles still quote $13.49. The figure on this page is the current Steam price.
Is Dressmaker getting more content?
Yes. Cozy Lives has committed to an online challenge mode, transparent fabrics, full controller support and mobile and Switch ports. None has a release date yet.
